Musicians

Individual Sessions

Many musicians experience performance anxiety, nerves or a lack of confidence in a way that stops them from performing in a way that truly reflects their ability.

It can be frustrating not to perform at your best during important concerts, not because of a lack of ability, but because of not having the right state of mind at the right time.

Mike Cunningham has developed skills that can enable performers to increase their confidence and to overcome anxiety, allowing them to perform at their best when it really matters.

Workshop, Royal College of Music, Summer 2008

What can Mike help you with?

Mike can help you to...

  • prepare for important performances
  • overcome the unwanted symptoms of performance anxiety; shaking, dry mouth, lack of breath control, excessive feelings of nervousness and anxiety etc
  • prepare to perform confidently in auditions
  • increase your level of confidence and self-belief when performing

Workshops

Workshops are available for organisations training those in the performing arts. Depending on the length of the workshop, we will cover the following areas-
  • How to mentally prepare ahead of an important performance. Although people practise and rehearse over and over again to perfect every aspect of their performance, they are usually unaware of how to mentally prepare ahead of an important performance.
  • What to do to be confident when you first walk on stage. Many performers experience the first five minutes of the performance as the most nerve-wracking. They usually relax five to ten minutes into the performance and come out wishing they'd performed that way from the start. Mike will show you how to focus and give the best performance from the moment you walk on stage.
  • How to develop performance confidence. We will look at how changing posture, breathing, internal voice and the images that run through the mind can enable people to change how they perform for the better. This will include advice on how these can be intergrated into the practice routine.
What have people said about working with Mike?

"I cannot recommend Mike highly enough"

Elizabeth Trigg, Freelance Bassoonist

"After attending workshops and individual sessions with Mike I now have a variety of techniques which I can use to keep all performances calm and enjoyable. Mike covered all areas of performance from walking on stage confidently, how to practise for performing and imagining how I want to sound and putting this through my bass trombone."

Student, Guildhall School of Music and Drama

"Thank you for a very informative and enlightening presentation. You managed to engage the audience right through with your ideas which were certainly of great interest and relevance to our musicians. I hope to have you back again soon."

Mary Cosgrave, Professional Relations Manager, Royal College of Music

"To someone watching a workshop, the results are instantly audible and visible. Clearly the students are really put on the spot in front of their peers...but it is also clear that within moments of working
with Mike Cunningham they are put at ease and are happier with what they are feeling and hearing."
